Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) has introduced the Mental Health in Schools Act to ensure that schools provide access to critical mental health treatment for kids who need and deserve these services.
The bill would authorize funding for grants to schools and community mental health centers to work with community-based organizations to expand access to mental health services for students. A House companion bill will soon be introduced by Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.).
"Addressing the mental and emotional needs of our kids is just as important as keeping them safe from physical injury and illness," said Sen. Franken. "Healthy kids grow into healthy adults, and if we're able to catch and address mental health issues early, we can help kids become productive members of society. My Mental Health in Schools Act will help make sure that kids in need get access to the mental health treatment they deserve."
Sen. Franken’s bill has received broad support from the mental health community, including Mental Health America.

Feb 19, 2013 at 4:24 PM Sen. Franken,
I am a mother of three children and I am currently pursuing a master degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I am pleased to see that someone is fighting for the health of our children. I have always thought that if our children were taught things at early ages then they would become a productive member of our community.
Our schools would be a great advocate to include better screening and prevention towards mental health issues in children. With schools, healthcare providers, and parents coming together as a team we can all help our children live healthier lives in a controlled environment where they do not feel alone. Once a child/family has learned how to cope and control a mental illness our communities will be a safer place for all.
Thank you for your time,

Feb 28, 2013 at 3:45 PM Sen Franken also has intoduced leg that would provide Mental health courts and Vet courts among other provisions.
He is out in front of this and introduced 2 bills, one provides a couple of 100 million dollars to help schools and early intervention.
I have no political affiliation with the Senator, but if we have a champion contribute and help him win reelection.
