We are happy to reporr that the Gulf War Veteran who was being prosecuted for gun violations after calling a suicide hotline last year, will be offered court-mandated counseling at a new Veterans Treatment Court that will avoid prosecution under an agreement reached last week.
The Washington Post recently ran a story on Sean Duvalol, a homeless Gulf War veteran who called a suicide hotline. He was carrying a note to his family and a homemade gun. The counselor told him to stay put and that help was on the way. Police arrived and took Duvall, who was homeless and unemployed at the time of the incident in June 2011, to a psychiatric facility. He is now being treated for depression and has a job an apartment. However, he has been charged with four federal counts involving manufacturing and possessing a homemade gun that carry a 40-year prison sentence. Mental Health America last week sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney calling on him to dismiss the charges, which you can read here.
In honor of Veterans Day (Friday, Nov. 11), let’s come together to pay tribute to the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces; patriots who have risked their lives in service to their country and the families who support them.
On Memorial Day: Remembering Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice; Helping Veterans, Families Every Day
This Memorial Day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. And we are reminded that every day we must help our veterans, the men and women in the armed forces and their families with the many challenges they face.
Mental Health America is proud to champion Operation Healthy Reunions, a first-of-its-kind program that provides education and helps to bust the stigma of mental health issues among soldiers, their families, and medical staff to ensure that a greater number of military families receive the prompt and high-quality care they deserve.
It is our solemn duty.
This Veterans Day we recognize the service and sacrifice of millions of men and women and the sacrifices of their families. We hope you will spend some time during the day to thank or honor them in some way.
